Use this QuickForm Statement of Work (SOW) for software configuration and software development projects, including mixed projects involving both configuration and development.

Software configuration involves setting up existing product features "out of the box" to meet customer requirements. It usually involves mature software products with robust user-selectable features and minimal scripting of code.

Software development involves designing and coding custom software. You can specify a traditional Waterfall Development Method, the newer Agile Development Method (e.g., Extreme Programming" or "XP") or use different methods for different aspects of the project (e.g., use Waterfall to develop a core database application, with Agile Development of the user interface).

The contractor may be responsible for the entire project. Or, its role may be limited to providing expert assistance to customer's staff or co-contractors.

The project may start with an initial requirements specification phase. Or, it can start from an existing Requirements Specification or more detailed Architecture Specification, if already completed.

You can specify the place of performance, pricing method (fixed price, hourly or some variation) and payment schedules. The project can end with acceptance in the test environment, or you can specify deployment of the software on a pilot or full production rollout. The customer can be given a right to terminate for convenience.

The SOW can be used for a project between the contractor and the end-user customer. It can also be used for sub-contract arrangements between a sub-contractor and its prime contractor.

The SOW focuses on technical project work and does not address important legal issues addressed in the main agreement. For that reason, never use a SOW except under a main agreement.
